We often get asked what equipment we recommend for each of the challenges and where this can best be sourced from. Which ever equipment you select it is strongly recommended that it matches your abilities and that you have used it at least once prior to the event.
Below are some of the factors for you to consider:
The swim - is an open water event, the water is deep (you won't be able to stand at any point on the route other than entry and exit from the water) and quite possibly cold. Wetsuits are recommended as they aid buoyancy and could be compulsary if the water temperature goes below 12 degrees. (It is unlikely to get high enough for wetsuits to be banned.) Select a wetsuit used for triathlon events and avoid those used for other water activities such as water skiing as they may well have seams that can cause discomfort and chafing. If you do not want to buy a wetsuit they can be rented for the day from some triathlon suppliers.
The kayak - takes place on inland water that should not have either strong tides or currents. You want a kayak that you can balance in comfortably (don't bring a K1 if you have never kayaked before - you'll be doing a lot of swimming). We recommend something like the Pyranha Master which is commonly used in kayak clubs for a variety of purposes. Favour longer and broader craft up to and including sea kayaks. Buoyancy aids are compulsary, if you are providing your own kayak please ensure you bring a buoyancy aid with you. The kayaks provided by the organisers are expected to be of the Masters type.
The cycle - the route for this challenge has yet to be finalised however is likely to incorporate tarmac roads, bicycle and tow paths. The surfaces will generally be good but uneven in places and will increase the risk of punctures for racing bikes. We expect the recommended bike to be a hydrid / cyclo cross which offer more robust tyres but not the same weight disadvantge as a mountain bike.
The run - the surfaces are expected to be a combination of tarmac roads, bicycle and tow paths. A good pair of correctly fitting running shoes is essential along with comfortable running shorts and shirt that don't chafe legs or nipples.
