One day Graeme Schlachter was regaling Simon Grint and Mike Bass, over a pint, of his recent swim across the English Channel - completed on 8 September 2008 in 11 hours 45 minutes - Mike and Simon were debating what he could do next.
A couple of beers later, with our defences now well down, we had somehow devised the eXtreme 5 Challenge - which involved ALL of us, not just Graeme – doing the following:
• running a 26 mile marathon (42 km)
• cycling 1,050 miles from Lands End to John O’Groats (c1,700km from the bottom to the top of the UK)
• kayaking 60 miles along the Caledonian Canal (100km from West to East coast of Scotland)
• playing 4 rounds of golf in a day (72 holes which took us 15 hours); and
• as we are all ex-Zimbabwe we decided that the 5th Challenge would be to raise £100,000 for Homes in Zimbabwe.
We are proud to say that we achieved this massive physical effort in 34 days between 4 July and 8 August 2009. In the process, we covered the length and breadth of the UK all under our own steam! Not only did we dramatically improve our fitness and lose some weight, but our pockets are now also considerably lighter as we self-funded the venture.
It's all worth though as to date with the very generous support of a great number of people and organisations we have raised £58,000.
